Treasure Island

You can’t really grow up in America without hearing pirate stories. Even if you aren’t a fan of adventure stories, the trope is everywhere in our culture.

The most famous of these stories is Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. This used to be the book young boys would sneak under their covers and read by flashlight, but now it is mandatory reading by schools–which takes away some of the pleasure. Not to mention the language is somewhat old fashioned and confusing to us now.

Still, read or not, the characters in these pages are everywhere–Long John Silver and his parrot are not just fictional mutineers, they are also a fishy fast food mascot. I also knew a few others, like Ben Gunn and Tom Morgan, even though I hadn’t known where they came from. Disney had a theme park “Discovery Island” based on the story, though it is shut down now. And there’s just a bunch of adaptations and other cultural references from Stevenson’s story.

To be honest, I really wasn’t that into the book itself. I really just skimmed it to get the jist. The seafaring dialect was difficult to read unless you really go slow, and I mostly had the story in my head anyway. I mostly just wanted to get through it to check it off my list and get all the cultural reference goodies. I like to connect the dots on this sort of thing to all the moments in my life that have related back to old books like this. And there were several. I’ll probably come across other scenes in other movies now that I’ll go “Ooooooh that’s the thing from the thing!” You know how that works.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

I had no idea that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was a novella. My book is a normal sized book, so I was expecting a normal sized novel! However, the actual story is only 82 pages long, and the rest is filled with little penny dreadfuls. Interesting!

My habit is to read a short story every afternoon, so I’ll save those for later. That way I can move on to other books and reviews and such.

Speaking of reviews, this was another gothic that was just ok for me. The writing was very simple compared to Le Fanu’s, but after hearing about this story all my life, I was expecting way more out of it. It was mostly lawyering and letters. Sure, there was one murder…but we heard about it second hand, and we hardly even saw the monster.

Some stories are best left to the theatrical versions, I suppose.

Currently Reading

I’ve shared before that musicals are one of my husband’s favorite things. And his favorite musicals is Jekyll and Hyde. When he’s in a particularly productive mood, he will almost always be blasting that soundtrack, singing at the top of his lungs.

I, however, have never seen the musical, or read the book. So, it’s time for me to catch up. Since it’s spooky October time, I figured it was a perfect opportunity.

I started it yesterday afternoon, just in time for my H #fmschallenge day on Instagram, hence the selfie. Forgive the sloppy hair…that’s what a phone headset does to you.

Book and Candle

I completely missed my window for this picture this morning. I was so bummed. Clouds are funny here. It’ll be gloomy only for a few hours, and then it all burns off and we have blaring blue skies for the rest of the day.

I thought we might luck out and have rain and clouds all day today, since it was so stormy this morning. But, no dice. By 10, it was bright and sunshiney again. Don’t get me wrong, sun is nice and all, but Texas is in a drought, and I really miss the long stretches of grey that we had in Indiana.

Favorite Cover

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover!

Um….that’s bullshit, and we all know it. Books are PRETTY! That’s part of the whole point of owning them!

And really, the whole reason we have book photo challenges 🙂

Check out this bad ass copy of RLS’ Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that the hubster bought a few years back. This one is coming up soon on the TBR list, so be watching out for a review!
